The other role of a parent

After 3 years being a father, here is my biggest discovery. Who I am as a parent matters less than the environment my kids are exposed to. Where they live, who they meet, what they see or hear.

Of course, I am part of this environment. But my most important role is shaping up the environment they grow up in. And it is likely that this role will always be invisible to my kids. If one day they ever think about how I was as a father, they will focus on the visible role: how I behaved around them. It doesn’t make the other role useless, but it’s important to acknowledge it, because when looking for inspiration from the education you received, you might realize that you need to rewire your perception and start looking at the invisible decisions that shaped up the environment you grew in yourself.
